Harman Family Foundation
Shawn Harman and his family have been helping to feed Saskatchewan for decades. Now they are helping to ensure a better future for the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre, with their generous donation of $100,000 to the Nutrien Plant Possibility capital campaign. Shawn also donated his time as a volunteer with the campaign, lending his support to fundraising for the project.
The Harmans’ business, Star Egg, was started by Shawn’s father, Bert, and grandfather, Walter, in 1966. Shawn, now CEO of the company, along with his sister and business partner Dana, witnessed from an early age the entrepreneurial mindset required to take risks and grow. Shawn reflects proudly that when he was a child the business distributed 5,000 boxes of eggs each week. Today the company does 10X that amount, the equivalent of 1.3 million eggs every day.
Shawn’s leadership extends to the broader industry, where he fills roles such as President of Entrepreneurs’ Organization and Chair of Saskatchewan Egg Producers. He enjoys meeting with, learning from and sharing experiences with others in the business community.
Shawn and his wife, Rose, have three kids, and the family enjoys spending time together. They are likely to be found outdoors if possible, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and more. Shawn especially cherishes their time at the lake or traveling together and places emphasis on the importance of family and friends.
The power of giving back to the community has always been part of life for the family as modelled by previous generations. Now Shawn has ingrained that spirit of quiet giving into the company as well. As much as possible, Star Egg supports the causes that come across their desk, like the Plant Possibility campaign.
“The new Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre facility will better serve the community,” says Shawn. “As food producers, we believe in the work the organization does and in this capital campaign. This community has supported our business, and we want to give back.”
The Harman family’s donation to the Nutrien Plant Possibility campaign follows a long history of providing nutritious eggs to the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre. Eggs provide much-needed protein to food baskets and the extension of this partnership will create a healthier future for all.
